What is ADHD?

Updated: Sep 22

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning or development. ADHD is typically diagnosed in childhood, but it can continue into adulthood.

Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD are generally categorized into two main types: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Some individuals may predominantly display symptoms of one type, while others may experience a combination of both.

1. Inattention Symptoms:

• Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities.

• Frequent careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities.

• Difficulty following through on instructions and completing tasks.

• Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli.

• Frequently losing items necessary for tasks and activities (e.g., toys, school assignments).

• Often forgetful in daily activities.

• Avoiding or being reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (like homework).

2. Hyperactivity/Impulsivity Symptoms:

• Fidgeting with or tapping hands or feet, or squirming in the seat.

• Inability to stay seated in situations where it’s expected.

• Running or climbing in inappropriate situations (in children).

• Unable to play or engage in leisure activities quietly.

• Talking excessively.

• Interrupting or intruding on others’ conversations or games.

• Difficulty waiting for their turn.

How is ADHD Tested?

Testing for ADHD typically involves a comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional, which includes:

1. Clinical Interviews:

• A detailed discussion about the individual’s symptoms, behaviors, and how they impact daily life. The clinician will gather information from parents, teachers, or other caregivers, especially for children.

2. Behavioral Questionnaires and Rating Scales:

• Standardized questionnaires or rating scales are often used to assess the presence and severity of ADHD symptoms. These may be completed by parents, teachers, or the individual themselves.

3. Observation:

• The healthcare provider may observe the individual’s behavior in different settings, such as home, school, or during clinical visits.

4. Medical Examination:

• A physical exam may be conducted to rule out other conditions that might cause similar symptoms, such as learning disabilities or mood disorders.

5. Neuropsychological Testing:

• In some cases, cognitive and neuropsychological tests may be administered to assess attention, executive function, memory, and other related cognitive abilities.
